What do I need before I can start driving lessons?

Before you start your driving lessons you will need to be at least 17 years old and hold a UK provisional driving licence.

How much are the driving lesson prices?

Our driving lesson prices can vary for different areas. We also may have an offer on from time to time. So please get in touch and we will be happy to talk you through the best option for yourself.

How many driving lessons will I need to take?

The amount of driving lessons you will need can vary from pupil to pupil. However, the DVSA suggest that on average it takes 45 hours of driving lessons plus 22 hours of private practice to be ready for your driving test.

What areas do Cowley's School of Motoring cover for driving lessons?

We cover a wide range of areas for driving lessons. We cover driving lessons in Newton Abbot, Exeter, Torquay, Paignton, Teignmouth, Dawlish, Ashburton, Buckfastliegh and Kingsteignton. We cover the surrounding areas too, so if you live near by get in touch and we can check if we can book you in.

Do Cowley's School of Motoring offer automatic driving lessons?

Do I need to pass my theory test before learning to drive?

No you can start your driving lessons before passing your theory test. Your driving instructor will help you with you thoery practice, you will also benifit from our free online theory practice.

How do I pay for my driving lessons?

We can take card payments, cash, or bank transfer. All our driving instructors are self employed so once you have started your driving lessons you can discuss the best options with them.

How long will my driving test be?

The driving test lasts between 35-40 minutes long. We offer a mock driving test so that you are ready and aware of how a driving test feels. 

Can I choose where I will be picked up for my driving lessons?

As long it’s still within the area your driving instructors covers this will be fine. 

Do Cowley's School of Motoring have female driving instructors?

Yes we offer driving lessons with a female driving instructor. Check out our female driving instructor page for more information.

What will happen on my first driving lesson?

On your first driving lesson, your driving instructor will introduce themselve, check your driving licence and eyesight. If you’re new to driving your first lesson will cover controls and moving off and stopping. If you’ve already got some experience you driving instructor will assess your skill level and help you work on any learning needs you have.

How do I book my practical driving test?

We will book and manage your driving test for you. this makes your life easier and allows you to just focus on learning and getting ready for your driving test.

I'm an anxious driver, will I struggle?

We have lots of experience training anxious drivers. All our driving instructors are calm and patient and have lots of techniques to help calm your nerves. Also, as one of our ‘go the extra mile’ bonuses we offer you access to an online course aimed at nervous drivers.

Can I learn to drive in my own car?

As long as your insurance covers doing driving lessons then this will be fine. Your driving instructor may want to do an assessment lesson in thier car first. 

I have a foreign driving licence, can I still take lessons?

This depends on what country your licence is from.

  • All licences allow you to drive for a year before needing to swap to a UK licence.
  • With EU licences you are allowed to drive until it expries.
  • If you live in these countries you can transfer your licence to a UK licence without taking a test.  Australia, Barbados, British Virgin Islands, Canada, Falkland Islands, Faroe Islands, Gibraltar, Hong Kong, Japan, Monaco, New Zealand, Republic of Korea, Singapore, South Africa, Switzerland, and Zimbabwe
  • All other countried you will need to apply for UK provisional licence and pass a UK driving test. We can help you with this process.
Can I drive on a dual carriageway during a lesson?

Yes, learning dual carriageways are an important part of learning to drive. Before driving on dual carriageways we will need to build up you skills to handle the higher speeds and level of awareness and planning.

If I take manual driving lessons can I drive an automatic car?

Yes if you take a driving test in a manual car, you can drive both automatic and manual cars. If you take automatic driving lessons and test you will only be able to drive automatic cars.

How long is my theory test valid for?

You will need to pass your practical driving test within two years of passing your theory test.

Can you help me with my theory test learning?

Yes! In the car on your driving lessons your driving instructor will have be able to answer any questions you have and give you some pointers. Also as one of the extras we offer you have access to free online theory practice.

What do I need to bring with me to my first driving lesson?

You will need to bring your provisional driving licence and if payment hasn’t already been made then you will need to bring that. It might also be an idea to bring a drink as the nerves can give you a dry mouth. 

How many driving lessons can I take in a week?

This can range from 40 hours to 1 1/2 hours. If you’re doing an intensive course, then it will be a lot of hours in a week. If your taking your driving lessons weekly, then we recommend 1-2 driving lessons per week. We don’t recommend doing 1 hour driving lessons as your progress will be slow and you will end up spending more in the long run.

Can I drive on the Motorway as a learner?

Yes, but it must be with a driving instructor and in a dual controlled car. You are not allowed to do private practice with your parents for example on the motorway.

We incorporate motorway lessons into driving lessons and head on to the M5 near Exeter.
