Covid-19 Driving Lessons

Editor's note: This post is from 2020 and is kept as an archive. The Covid-19 measures described below no longer apply to lessons or driving tests — but we're proud of how we kept pupils learning safely through that period, and we still keep our tuition cars spotless!

Driving lessons during Covid-19 look a little different, and we're doing everything we can to keep you and ourselves safe during this time.

What does a Covid-19 driving lesson look like?

All your normal lesson procedures still apply, and you'll learn road safety in the same way. The differences come in how we interact and prevent cross-contamination:

• We check with you before the lesson to ensure you have no symptoms and haven't been in contact with anyone with Covid-19.
• When you arrive, we ask you to sanitise your hands before entering the car, which has been cleaned and disinfected before the lesson.
• During the lesson we sanitise again if we touch the steering wheel or anything else to assist you, and wipe the area down.
• We wear masks during lessons. We won't force you to wear one, but we advise it.
• After a lesson, avoid touching your face and wash your hands as soon as possible.

What was different about the driving test?

The test itself was conducted to the same standards, on the same topics. The procedure changed slightly:

• Masks were compulsory unless you had a medical reason not to wear one.
• Examiners met you by your car rather than in the waiting room.
• Tests were staggered to limit numbers at the test centre; you arrived 5 minutes early.
• Your instructor couldn't sit in on the test.
• If you failed while out on test, the examiner directed you back early to limit time in the car, and feedback was given outside the car.
• You could cancel at short notice without charge if you had symptoms.
