Everything You Need To Know About Becoming A Driving Instructor

There's no denying that becoming a driving instructor is a big undertaking — but it's certainly one that's well worth the hard work and cost. The benefits are real: being your own boss, controlling your work/life balance, and choosing a schedule that suits your life. It's easy to see why the majority of driving instructors report high job satisfaction. And since there will always be people who need to learn to drive, it's a stable career you can build for years to come.

So, how do you become a driving instructor?

How to become a driving instructor

If you want to become a professional driving instructor, Cowley's is here to help. Our training package provides everything you need to begin working as a successful instructor — we do everything we can to maximise your chances of passing, and we guide the whole process from beginning to end. You focus on learning, passing, and enjoying the road to your new career.

The route looks like this:

  1. Get a DBS check — required before you can train.
  2. Apply to the DVSA to become a driving instructor.
  3. Pass the ADI Part 1 (theory test) — we guide you through with online practice.
  4. Pass the ADI Part 2 (driving test) — we make sure your driving is at the required standard with in-car training.
  5. Pass the ADI Part 3 (instructional test) — we prepare you thoroughly for teaching real pupils.

Once you've passed all three tests, you register as an ADI, collect your green badge, and you're ready to work as a driving instructor.

Our training package

Our package makes qualifying straightforward: practical in-car tuition, at-home reading materials, professional lessons and expert help — at £50/hour, pay as you go, with no contracts and no big upfront costs. Unlike the national schools, you're never locked in.
